Asphalt Sealant

Now a day’s asphalt surface has become a popular surface material. This is because of its cheaper price and durability. Asphalt surface can be built easily and the process is a quick one. So that parking lots or pavements can be built in no time with minimum effort. But with time the asphalt surface wears away. It happens mainly because of its exposure to the sun and other harming components. To fill up and repair those cracks and potholes asphalt sealant is required. It is a mixture which can be classified in the elastic polymer group. Asphalt sealant is generally used to coat and seal asphalt surfaces. The coating of this actually protects the asphalt surface from the decaying effect of the sunlight and the oxidation. Along with that it also prevents damages caused by ice and water, fills structural gaps and after all provides a uniform appearance to the asphalt surface.

Driveway sealant

Asphalt sealant is often called as driveway sealant. This is so because it is most commonly used in driveway repair. The general ingredient of asphalt sealer is thick asphalt. But it may also include coal tar. Coal tar sealants are sometimes preferable to asphalt sealants. But it is said that the asphalt sealants are most environment friendly than the coal tar ones. Using asphalt sealant means less health—risk. While applying asphalt sealant the surface should be cleaned beforehand. If there is any oil, dirt, grease or sand residues then it will slow down the adhesion of the sealant. So removing those residues from the surface before application is mandatory. If there is any spot of grease then scrub or scrap that off will be a wise thing to do. If you found out that the oil or grease saturation is too heavy to remove, then it is advisable to replace the whole surface rather than sealing it.

Where you can apply asphalt sealants

You can apply the sealant in the cracks which are smaller than a quarter inch. Cracks bigger or deeper than that can not be sealed with the sealant. That will need a repair in proper process. If the surface is a rough one, then try some clean silica sand with the asphalt sealant.

How to use asphalt sealant

Before starting the job you must read the instructions given on the container of the sealant and follow them. If you are using the waterproof sealant then pour it directly in horizontal lines on the surface. Perform this twice with a broom to get a clean and continuous result. But make it sure that the first coating has become dry before starting the second one. If any ridge occurs during the process, smooth them out. It generally takes three to four hours to get dry. But the area needs to be kept untouched for a whole day. After that you can use the surface for your routine job. Do not apply sealant during the rainy season or winter. Apply sealant in every two years.
